Goals

This course provides an in-depth understanding of the interactions between the climate and urban environments. Its objectives are:

  • Understanding the fundamental principles of natural ventilation in buildings
  • Gain knowledge of urban flow and its impact on comfort and sustainability
  • Analyse microclimate phenomena and their influence on urban planning
  • Use numerical methods to assess energetic and climatic performance in urban environments

Programme

The course is made of two modules:

  1. Natural ventilation of buildings (6h CM + 4h BE)
  • Fundamental principles of natural ventilation
  • Influence of meteorological conditions and architectural features
  • Applications and case studies
  1. Urban flows (10h CM + 5h BE)
  • Elements of urban micro-meteorology
  • Interaction between wind and urban structures
  • Comfort and safety
  • Urban microclimate, and the heat island effect
  • Role of vegetation and nature-based solutions

Sustainable development

Level 2: A substantial part of the activities is dedicated to environmentally sustainable development and social responsibility.
