Goals

This course provides a basic knowledge of biology from biomolecules (DNA, proteins, lipids…) to the subcellular structure of the cell. It also introduces membrane biomimetic systems. Students with a physics, chemistry or engineering background are encouraged to attend this course. Students with a background in biology are exempt from taking this class but they may also follow it especially for the biomimetic part and for practicals.

Programme

Part 1. Basics of biology

  1. Biomolecules (DNA, proteins, lipids…), structure and function.
  2. Molecular assemblies, the plasma membrane, biological organelles and the cell. The different types of cells and tissues Part 2. Biomimetism, Nanobiotechnologies
  3. Biomimetic Lipid sys tems (monolayers, Supported membranes, vesicles), preparation and characterization methods, applications 4)Applications of Atomic Force Microscope to biological systems (proteins, DNA, membranes)
