Goals

The aim of this course is to address the issue of biomaterials and the characteristics required for their application in medical devices. Theoretical teaching is structured around the different classes of biomaterials and their interactions, and deals with tissue repair.

Programme

Theoretical teaching focuses on the different classes of biomaterials and their interactions, and covers tissue repair:

  • Biomaterials: general concepts (general mechanics of materials).
  • Synthetic polymers / natural polymers.
  • Ceramics.
  • Metals.
  • Content-container interactions.
  • Sterilization of biomaterials/medical devices (MD).
  • Tissue engineering: principles and applications in skin, cartilage and bone. The lectures are supplemented by a tutorial session to put students in a position to analyze research and development (R&D) work in the field of biomaterials (critical reading of articles).
